I am a Professor of Creative Writing and Director of the Creative Writing programme at the University of East Anglia (UEA). Previously I was a long-standing tutor for the Arvon Foundation, and was for three years the Royal Literary Fund Writing Fellow at UEA. Between 2004-7 I was Director of the English Literature with Creative Writing BA at UEA. Between 2006-11 I was Director of the Creative Writing (Prose Fiction) MA. I currently teach and lecture at undergraduate and MA level, and supervise numerous PhD students. I attend many meetings. In 2010 I secured AHRC funding to establish the website #newwriting.net. In 2011 I wrote UEA’s successful submission to the ‘Diamond Jubilee’ Round of the Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education. I'm on the board of the National Academy of Writing, and on the advisory board of the writers-into-schools charity First Story.
